Reasons for Tooth Extractions

Reasons for Tooth Extractions

Unlike our primary teeth, our permanent ones are meant to last our entire life. However, a variety of reasons can result in a tooth extraction being necessary. If a condition can be resolved by removing a tooth and it will be for the better good of your overall oral health, Prestigious Smiles may recommend an appointment to have the tooth extracted. Some of the most common reasons for tooth extraction include:

Teeth Crowding

Certain patients do not have enough room in their mouth to properly fit all of their teeth, leading to crowding and on some occasions, completely stopping certain teeth from erupting. This can complicate the functionality of your bite as well as cause issues with appearance.

Tooth Infection

Certain lifestyle choices, dental hygiene habits, and injuries can result in a tooth becoming infected. Typically, a root canal can be performed to save the tooth. However, in some cases, a tooth extraction may be the only option to stop the infection from spreading.

Periodontal (Gum) Disease

As gingivitis progresses, it becomes gum disease, a common condition that can result in gums separating from teeth. Teeth will also become loose and begin to shift; in certain cases of gum disease, a tooth extraction may be the best treatment option.

Wisdom Teeth

At some point in life, many people eventually have their wisdom teeth removed. This is due to the fact they often do not come in properly and become impacted and/or infected. Sometimes they may also come in crooked, putting other teeth at risk for overcrowding. If your wisdom teeth are going to cause dental complications, we will most likely suggest they be extracted.

If you think that you may need a tooth extraction, don’t hesitate to contact our Houston dental office. We’d be happy to schedule an appointment and evaluate your teeth and overall oral health to determine if a tooth extraction may be the best course of dental treatment for you.
