DIY and home remedies are the buzz words of the recent past. For every ailment out there, there is a natural home remedy on the internet. While there is nothing wrong with trying your hand at natural remedies available at home, some tips that are doing the rounds are nothing but myths. Regarding DIY dental techniques, even if natural edible products are used, it is not necessary that using them would not have a negative effect on teeth.

Take a look at the three most popular DIY teeth whitening methods and facts about them:

  • Baking Soda + Citric Juice

The most common tip to whiten and brighten teeth is to add a few drops of citric juice, i.e., orange or lemon juice, to baking soda. The truth is baking soda is an abrasive product, and rubbing excess amounts of it on a regular basis will only lead to erosion of the tooth enamel. Foodstuff that contains any type of acid, in general, are harmful to the teeth.

  • Activated Charcoal

Although activated charcoal is a rave - finding itself in all types of health and wellness products, there is no solid study that proves that charcoal is safe or effective in teeth whitening. A study published in The Journal of The American Dental Association conducted a literature review on the same lines. In fact, charcoal is known to be abrasive, causing the teeth enamel to erode and expose the yellowish dentin layer.

  • Oil/Spice Pulling

Swishing oil or using turmeric is said to whiten teeth. However, there is no scientific evidence that proves these claims. Moreover, swishing oil can dissolve dental materials and result in the loss of dental fillings and crowns that would need to be refitted.

When it comes to teeth brightening, no procedure is more efficient than professional teeth whitening. Even over-the-counter whitening products do not always yield the best results. Your dentist will conduct a bleaching treatment that will have significant improvement in just one sitting and dramatic results over the course of appointments.

So, if you wish to achieve a brighter shade of teeth, simply call your dentist and book an appointment ASAP.
