The Basics of Dental Veneers

Dental veneers are a layer of dental material that can be placed over existing teeth to make up for damages or imperfections. In the case of a chipped front tooth, a veneer can be placed over it to make up for the cosmetic damage. It helps function like a regular tooth by offering strength as well as sharpness to cut and chew. Besides using veneers as a solution to damage, they are also used as a cosmetic appliance to offer a set of straight teeth or to cover up discolored teeth.
Types of Veneers
Veneers can be divided into two types based on the material they are made up of. They are as follows:
- Porcelain Veneers:These are the most popular of the two veneer options - given their strength, long-lasting feature, and stain resistance. They are custom-made in the lab and can be made to match the color of neighboring teeth to offer a natural look. The added advantage of this type is that not a lot of teeth would have to be removed in order to accommodate the veneer.
- Composite Resin Veneers:Composite resin veneers are made of the same material as the filling material used to bond teeth. In this type too, many teeth need not be removed to place the veneer. However, these are not as strong and sturdy as porcelain veneers. These are less expensive, can be repaired or modified easily, and can be installed in a single sitting.
How Veneers are Placed
The dentist typically takes two appointments to fix dental veneers. Here is how it goes:
- During the first visit, the dentist will examine the condition, understand the patient’s needs and carry out necessary tests. Along with manual examination, the dentist may take digital X-rays as well. Then, he or she will take impressions of the teeth structure and send it to the lab to prepare a custom veneer. A temporary veneer can be provided for the time being.
- During the next appointment, the veneer will be placed on the teeth after cleaning, polishing, and etching. The veneer is fixed onto the tooth using cement and solidified using a special light beam.
Veneers are a simple fix for minor tooth damage and improve the aesthetics of teeth. They last for about 10 years on average and fill the person up with confidence to face the world.
