TMJ is short for temporomandibular joint, the joint that’s responsible for the opening and closing of your jaw. Sometimes people experience temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD), which can cause jaw pain among other symptoms. These disorders can be caused by stress, injury, arthritis, and genetics, among other things.
Symptoms of TMD
There are many symptoms of a TMJ disorder, including:
- Soreness or pain in your jaw, face, or around your ears
- Pain or difficulty while chewing
- Locking of the jaw
- Aching feelings anywhere in the face
- Clicking noise when you chew or open your mouth
Experiencing these symptoms does not guarantee that you have TMJ. However, it’s a good idea to see your dentist if they persist.
How Is It Treated?
If you think you might be experiencing TMD, it’s a good idea to talk to your dentist. You may need to have x-rays taken to see what’s happening in your temporomandibular joint.
One of the main treatments for TMD is night guard therapy. You’ll be given a type of mouthguard to wear at night that keeps your jaw aligned and prevents you from clenching your teeth together in your sleep. This usually alleviates the pain associated with TMD and is an easy, non-invasive fix.
At Prestigious Smiles in North Houston, we’re proud to offer night guard therapy to help treat symptoms of TMD. Call our Houston dental office to book an appointment with Dr. Zarghouni today.
