Sedation Dentistry Houston, TX

What is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry uses mild, calming medications to help nervous or anxious patients alleviate feelings of worry or fear when they’re in the dental chair.

Sedation can be a viable solution for patients of any age who require dental care, but find it difficult to go to the dentist. Patients who are sedated in the dental chair feel calm and relaxed, and remain awake when receiving care.

Useful for relieving feelings of moderate or intense anxiety, it can be helpful during lengthy appointments or visits that require multiple procedures. It can also be beneficial for:

Patients with special needs
Patients with a strong gag reflex
Patients who find it difficult to sit still

What types of Dental Sedation are available?

Dr. Zarghouni and her team offer two types of conscious sedation at Prestigious Smiles Family Dentistry, both of which calm your nerves while keeping you awake and responsive:

Oral Sedatives
If you’re anxious about your procedure, you can take conscious oral sedatives about 30 minutes prior to your scheduled appointment. Oral sedatives are used along with local anesthesia to provide a calming, pain-free experience.

Nitrous Oxide
Also known as laughing gas, nitrous oxide is a safe, mild sedative that’s inhaled through a mask placed over your nose. As you breathe, you’ll inhale a mixture of oxygen and the sedative, which has a slightly sweet smell. Nitrous oxide is known for inducing total relaxation that takes effect in a matter of minutes.

How do I prepare for
Dental Sedation?

If you feel you or your child would benefit from dental sedation, it’s important to plan for its use ahead of time so you can receive pre-sedation instructions.

The team at Prestigious Smiles Family Dentistry will also let you know if the type of sedation you chose prevents you from driving immediately after your procedure, so you can arrange to have someone else drive you home.

What can I expect after Dental Sedation?

The effects of nitrous oxide typically wear off more quickly than those of oral sedatives. Patients have reported feeling groggy, dizzy, confused, or even slightly nauseous when coming out of sedation, but these normal reactions are generally short-lived and will disappear once the medicine wears off completely.
