What is Invisalign?

Dental braces were the only go-to solution for treating malocclusion in the past. Fortunately, advances in dental technology produced Invisalign, a better orthodontic aligner that does not have most of the drawbacks of braces.

Invisalign system uses plastic aligners made from dental-grade material. The aligners work using the same principle as any other orthodontic aligner — applying pressure on the teeth in a specific direction to move them as required.

How Is Invisalign Better Than Braces?

Invisalign addresses some of the major disadvantages of dental braces:

Aesthetics: Metal braces are visible, which could lead to embarrassment whenever you talk, smile, etc. Invisalign resolves this issue by being made from transparent plastic. The aligners stay under disguise, allowing you to smile with confidence. However, they aren’t completely invisible. Anyone taking a closer look at your teeth will notice them.

Safety: The aligners do not contain any metal components such as brackets or wires. It is common for individuals with braces to injure the soft inner lining of their mouth during the treatment phase. On the other hand, Invisalign has rounded edges and smooth walls that do not harm the soft tissues even when you sustain oral trauma.

Effectiveness: Invisalign is just as effective as braces when it comes to treating complicated cases of malocclusion. Other oral conditions that can be treated using Invisalign are overbite, underbite, crossbite, spacing, etc.

Removability: Perhaps the most compelling advantage of Invisalign is that it can easily be worn and taken off whenever you want, such as while brushing your teeth or eating food. It has to be worn for at least 22 hours every day — even while you sleep — so that the aligners can move the teeth as expected.

Comfort: Braces, with their brackets attached to the teeth and the wires that run through them, can cause a lot of pain and discomfort during the treatment as the teeth are moved. But, this is not the case with Invisalign, as the walls of the aligners shift the teeth gently without causing any blockage in their movement.

Diet: With Invisalign treatment, you can take the aligners off, eat anything you wish, and put them back on after cleaning the teeth. But with braces, the dentist would suggest you keep a few foods off the table as they can interfere with the treatment, such as hard or sticky foods.
