After a dental procedure, there are a few things you should do to make sure the area heals properly and with no complications. Here are some tips to keep your mouth on the road to recovery.

WHAT TO EXPECT

After a dental procedure, it’s advised that you wait at least two hours to eat or drink. This will give the anesthesia time to wear off.

Some pain and discomfort are normal after dental procedures. These can be alleviated through the use of over-the-counter painkillers in most cases. For more invasive procedures, a stronger painkiller might be prescribed.

If you have any bleeding that won’t clot or excessive pain that can’t be managed with pain medication, please call our office immediately or, if it’s after hours, go to the emergency room.

AFTERCARE

After a dental procedure, it’s important that you give the area time to properly heal. Try to eat soft foods that won’t scrape the procedure site or hurt your mouth to chew. You should avoid drinking through straws as well as anything else that might disturb the clot.

If you have any swelling in the area, you can manage it by using a cold compress.

It’s important that you keep the area clean and maintain your normal oral hygiene routine during the healing process. Clean the area gently so as not to disrupt the clot, but make sure that no food particles get stuck in the area as this can lead to infection.
