Tartrectomy, better known as dental cleaning, is a preventive treatment to remove tartar from the teeth.
Plaque adheres to all of our teeth, but most of it is removed by regular and effective brushing and flossing. However, any remaining plaque that is not removed will harden into tartar.
This causes the appearance of a rough surface that makes it easier for bacteria to adhere and damage the teeth and gums. Tartar cannot be removed by regular tooth brushing.
Dental cleaning is done on the surface of the teeth. When bacteria and tartar are found between the gums and the roots of the teeth, dental scaling is applied.
Scaling and root planing treatment is largely a preventative measure, but it can also be used to reverse or control gum disease when it is already present.
Unlike cleaning, it is a more invasive treatment. Dental scaling is only done when bacteria and tartar have reached the roots of the teeth.
If not removed, the presence of that tartar damages the bone structure that retains the teeth, potentially threatening their loss. The only way to prevent eventual tooth loss is to try to remove that accumulated tartar below the gum line.
A dental cleaning is done to remove excess tartar. In it, the dentist or dental hygienist uses ultrasound that causes the breakdown of tartar to allow its removal.
Subsequently, a high-speed brush is used to remove any remaining stains or stains. This treatment leaves the teeth free of tartar and greatly improves the chances of avoiding the onset of gum disease.
Unlike normal cleaning, scaling is used when bacteria and tartar have reached the gums of the teeth. Therefore, scraping is more invasive.
Scrapings or curettages generally require the use of a local anesthetic. In addition, sometimes, it is also carried out in several visits to limit the discomfort of the patient.
The application of local anesthesia is essential, as otherwise it could be a painful procedure. To clean the roots of the teeth, the tools used must be able to go below the gum line, between the gum and the root of the tooth.
Root scaling treatment can be an unpleasant experience, but it is essential for anyone with severe or advanced periodontal problems.
Maintaining a good cleaning routine at home by brushing and flossing, as well as regular check-ups and cleanings in the dental office, will allow treatment to be more bearable and maintenance intervals can be lengthened, being performed less frequently .
