What are dental crowns and bridges?

Dental crowns are used to cover a tooth and improve its appearance while restoring its functionality and strength. Crowns, sometimes called dental caps, fit over the tooth and cover it completely.

Dental bridges are used to fill in gaps of missing teeth. They are an excellent option if you don’t want a dental implant, but don’t want a gap showing in your mouth, either.

What are the benefits of dental crowns and bridges?

Dental crowns help cover up flaws in your teeth. By covering teeth that are discolored, chipped, or even broken, dental crowns give you a picture-perfect smile without invasive surgery.

Dental bridges improve your smile by filling in gaps from missing teeth, while also:

  • Preventing teeth from shifting to fill the hole
  • Evening out your bite
  • Making chewing easier
  • Maintaining your facial shape

How are dental crowns applied?

Dr. Zarghouni removes some of the enamel on your tooth to make room for the crown. Then, she makes a mold of your tooth and applies a temporary crown. Your new crown is created using the mold.

Once the new crown is in, you’ll return to Prestigious Smiles Family Dentistry where Dr. Zarghouni removes the temporary crown and applies the new one. If everything fits appropriately, she cements the crown into place. If it doesn’t fit, she’ll send it back to be adjusted.

How are bridges applied?

First, Dr. Zarghouni applies a dental crown to the teeth on either side of the missing tooth. Then, she makes an impression of your teeth and sends it to a laboratory so your custom bridge can be created, and applies a temporary one in the meantime.

Once your bridge is complete, which may take a few weeks, Dr. Zarghouni removes the temporary one and puts the new one in. If it all fits perfectly, she will seal it permanently. If adjustments are needed, the bridge will be sent back for modifications.
